Douglass F. Jacobs is an Associate Professor in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources (FNR) at Purdue University.  Dr. Jacobs received his B.A. in Ecology from Emory University in 1993, his M.S. in Forest Resources from the University of Georgia in 1998, and his Ph.D. in Silviculture from Oregon State University in 2001.  He joined the faculty at Purdue in 2001.  Since 2001, Dr. Jacobs has directed 14 graduate students, 5 post-doctoral scientists, 6 research associates, and 2 visiting scientists.  He has been associated with over $3.4 million in grant funding, with more than $2.0 million as principal investigator.

Dr. Jacobs has authored over 50 peer-reviewed research journal articles, as well as over 20 other research publications in journals or conference proceedings.  He has delivered over 100 presentations on his research.  Dr. Jacobs’ research interests focus on regeneration of forest tree species and silvicultural management of natural or plantation stands.  His research emphasizes physiological development of forest tree seedlings during nursery culture, but he has active research projects in many aspects of the life cycle of forest trees.  Principal external funding for Dr. Jacobs’ research is focused on three areas:  nursery propagation and seedling physiological quality, plantation establishment, and mid-rotation forest stand development.  His research aims to improve our basic scientific understanding of the biological development of forest tree species, particularly during juvenile growth stages.  Although he addresses many basic biological questions of forest tree species function, Dr. Jacobs prioritizes the capacity to extend his research results to operational management through extension publications, manuals, workshops, seminars, and media outlets.  He has authored over 50 extension publications, and has delivered over 80 extension presentations
