Woodland Management

Indiana's hardwood forest is one of the most productive and valuable resources in the nation. In Indiana 50,000 jobs depend on the wood using industry. This industry is the state's sixth largest industry contributing over 3 billion dollars to the economy. Indiana is third in the nation in the production in hardwood lumber and ninth of  total lumber production.

With some care and interest a landowner can greatly increase the the value of their woodlot. This care is the proper management of the forest. If left to grow by itself a hardwood forest is not a very efficient growing system. Many times the growth is concentrated on trees that will never mature or will be low value trees at maturity. Management changes this process to work for the landowner according to their objectives. Proper management includes Tree Planting, Timber Stand Improvement, and Timber Marking.
