Spring Fest News and Awards --
- Hosting of the 16th Central Hardwood Forest Conference. Except for a few errant hammering sounds at the Holiday Inn, the conference went off without a hitch, thanks largely to the efforts of Charles Michler, Doug Jacobs, and Liz Jackson. The proceedings of the conference (all 500+ pages) are available on CD and will soon be available on the web.
- Hosting of the 2nd Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment annual meeting. Cortney Mycroft coordinated the meeting at the John S. Wright Center and kept things moving smoothly throughout.
- The annual FNR research poster competition. Organized by Rick Meilan, this year’s competition featured judging in research and extension for undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. students. The posters were exceptional, reflecting the talent of the students creating them and the quality of the scholarship being conducted.
- The annual Beast Feast, sponsored by the Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society. This year’s group outdid themselves in providing a cornucopia of wild and exotic fare, including persimmon pie! Attendance was exceptional despite the cold conditions; every seat in the Wright Center conference room was filled, and students also pulled up chairs along the big walnut table. A good time was had by all, including alumni and spouses who returned for…
- A 50-year reunion for the class of 1958 (and earlier). Shelly Opperman organized a great set of events for the alums, most of whom arrived on Friday and stayed until Sunday.
- Spring Fest 2008 on Saturday, April 12, with activities and exhibits organized by virtually all of our student organizations. Kudos to Angie Archer for coordinating SpringFest, and to all of the volunteers who made it a success!
- The 74th Spring Awards Ceremony, held on Sunday in a Deans Auditorium that was packed with students, faculty, staff, family, and friends. Our best and brightest were on display! Special thanks to Linda Hawkins and W.L. Mills for all of their efforts to coordinate the reception, program, and ceremony. Scott Brundage, class of ’58, presented the Roy C. Brundage Memorial Scholarship (and a few stories), Jim Steen presented the Pike Lumber Scholarship, and Jud Scott presented the Vine & Branch Excellence in Urban Forestry Award. Drs. Goforth, Hoover, Weeks, Gazo, Mills, and Jacobs presented other awards. For a list of the scholarship and award winners click here.
Faculty Promotions--
- In recognition of their scholarly contributions and national/international reputations, Drs. Rado Gazo and Guofan Shao have been promoted to the rank of professor.
